Dental implants provide an innovative means for the replacement of a missing tooth or teeth restoring both function and esthetics. Implants can serve as a means of replacing dentures or even stabilizing loose dentures. Implants can also serve as a means of replacing one tooth or even several teeth. The premise is really quite simple, small fixtures made of medical grade titanium are placed in the jaw where they serve as support for crowns or bridges.

Classically, the implant is inserted into the jaw as part of the first step. Over the next two to six months the implant is allowed to biologically integrate with the jawbone. During this healing period a temporary tooth replacement can be worn over the healing site. In some cases Dr. Meltzer can employ a newer technology called Immediate Occlusal Loading (IOL) or Immediate Non-Occlusal Loading (INOL). These new technologies allow for the immediate placement of an implant at the time of tooth extraction as well as the immediate placement of a non-removable tooth or bridge. If a classic approach is employed then a second step is required after the two to six month healing period. Once the implant has successfully healed to the jaw a second piece is attached to the implant. This piece is called an abutment. The abutment serves as an interface between the crown and the implant.

Finally, a crown or other prosthesis is attached to the abutment. Restoring your ability to function and smile. Many of our patients find their dental implants so comfortable that they forget they ever were missing a tooth or multiple teeth.
