GUIDED PERIODONTAL (BONE) REGENERATION
Traditionally, eliminating the gum pockets by altering gum position and recontouring the uneven bone tissue has been used to treat gum disease. Although this is an effective way of treating gum disease, new and more sophisticated procedures are available. The options of resectioning (osseous surgery) and regeneration (rebuilding of lost support) will be discussed at your consultation and the best procedure to fulfill your specific needs will be selected.
Guided Periodontal (Bone) Regeneration “regenerates” the previously lost gum and bone tissue which supported your teeth.
The bone and gum tissue are supposed to fit tightly around your teeth, much in the way a turtleneck fits snuggly around your neck. In periodontal disease, this firm seal between the gum and the tooth is destroyed and pockets form around your teeth. Over time, these pockets become deeper and create more room for the periodontal bacterial plaque to slip under the tissue, and populate in the depths of the pockets. This results in further bone and tissue loss, eventually leading to tooth loss. Deep periodontal pockets cannot adequately be cleaned with daily at-home care. The bone regeneration procedure is necessary when the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed. It aims to repair some of your lost periodontal tissue.
Eliminating existing bacteria and regenerating bone and tissue helps to reduce pockets caused by the progression of periodontal disease. PROCEDURE
Most techniques utilize membranes, which are inserted over the bone defect. Some of these membranes are bio-absorbable and some require removal. Other reconstructive procedures involve the use of bioactive gels. The most recent advance has led Dr. Meltzer to use Growth-factor enhanced regeneration.
This approach is completely unique and makes use of a combination of a specific bioactive protein (highly purified recombinant of human platelet derived growth factor). rh PDGFBB and a bio compatible matrix BetaTCP.
This recombinant technology contains 1000 times more growth factor than is found in platelet rich plasma which has been used in the past.
This technique provides 3x more bone fill at 6 months than was seen in older techniques.
